Campfire Blog #6 | 5 Tips to Help You Tow Your Trailer

RVYARD RV Comprehensive Chassis Work

Towing a trailer for the first time can be a nerve-wracking experience. The thought of maneuvering a vehicle with an extra load attached behind it can be intimidating. But fear not, with a few tips and some practice, you'll be towing like a pro in no time!

Practice in an Empty Parking Lot

Before hitting the open road, find an empty parking lot to practice your towing skills. Set up some cones and practice turning, backing up, and stopping. This will help you get a feel for how your vehicle responds with the added weight of the trailer.

Take it Slow

Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Take your time and avoid rushing. Let impatient drivers pass you by and stick to a safe speed. Most trailer tires are not designed for high speeds, so it's best to stay within the recommended limits.

Take Wide Turns

When towing a trailer, you'll need to take wider turns than usual to avoid clipping curbs or other obstacles. Give yourself plenty of room when making turns to ensure a smooth and safe maneuver.

Use the "Hand at the Bottom of the Wheel" Technique

One helpful technique for towing is to place your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. This allows you to make smoother turns and avoid oversteering. By keeping your hand in the 6 o'clock position, if you turn to the right, the rear of the trailer will go right, and if you turn the wheel to the left, the back of the trailer will head to the left.

Consider Trailer Driving Schools

If you're still feeling unsure about towing a trailer, consider enrolling in a trailer driving school. These specialized programs can provide you with hands-on training and expert guidance to help you feel more confident behind the wheel. There are also great youtube videos!

With these tips in mind and some practice under your belt, you'll soon be towing a trailer with ease and confidence. Remember, it's okay to take it slow and ask for help if you need it. Happy towing!
